Metabolic Panel

Used as a broad screening tool to evaluate organ function and check for conditions such as diabetes, liver disease, and kidney disease, a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) may also be ordered by your physician to monitor known conditions, such as hypertension, and to monitor people taking specific medications for any kidney- or liver-related side effects. Your physician may order the entire CMP if he/she is following two or more individual CMP components as this offers more information.

Your physician will routinely order a CMP as part of your blood work-up for a medical exam or yearly physical. However, the individual tests, while being sensitive, does not specifically tell your physician what is wrong. If the test results or groups of test results are abnormal, your physician will usually follow this up with other specific tests to corroborate the diagnosis.
